Two Decent Ways to Protect Your WordPress Site

There are people who have nothing better to do with their time than go and try to break into WordPress pages and cause havoc. Here are two real easy ways of protecting your sites other than making a real difficult password.

1. Do not use the default name admin. The easiest way for someone to guess your password is to use a script that uses admin as the default administrative login name. Simply use another name. If you already have admin used then you can create a new administrator then take away the admin rights. I also use a tool to tell me how many times my site gets hit per day by people trying to use admin to login. I was shocked when I first read the report.

2. All database tables in WordPress have a naming scheme which makes it easy for scripts to alter the database through either mysql or php. When you’re configuring the wp-config.php file change the database prefix to something a little different than wp_ this will throw off the scripts looking for the default WordPress schema and throw them off their tracks.

There are other ways of protecting WordPress such as using htaccess to block certain countries or IPs from visiting your site. Of course then you take the risk of users from these sites not seeing your content, but if you will notice there are two very big countries who try to hack all the time or put irrelevant comments in your site and they usually come from very distinct blocks of IP addresses. If these are blocked then the problem is solved almost immediately.

There are many other ways of protecting your site, but these are probably the easiest and fastest to implement. It will save you hours of rebuilding your site.

How to Get Facebook Subscribers to Your Mail List

Add Your Mail List Form to a Facebook Tab

I can’t believe how easy this is. If you are building a mail list, which you should be if you’re doing any kind of Internet marketing, and you are a member of aweber you can easily add a tab on your facebook page to sign up new members to your mail list.

All you need to do is design a form in aweber and attach it to one of your mail lists then click here. Select the page from the drop down menu and boom! it’s done. It’s that easy!

I’m not sure how to change the tab icon yet. It is possible that you need to manually create the application to do so. I suppose I will try this in another session.

If you do end up making a Facebook tab please let me know about it by commenting here with the link and I’ll test it out for you. 🙂

Celebrity Grammar-What Our Stars Are Messing Up In Twitter

Ah, celebrities. They’re there to entertain us whether that’s their intention or not. Sure, many celebrities get their notoriety from making a great movie, song or other creative performance, and then there are those who make a splash due to their poor grammar and spelling on social networks.

Most of today’s celebrities can be found communicating with their fans through social platforms such as Twitter. And yes, Twitter does limit your characters to 140, so some creativity is needed in order to get your point across, but that doesn’t excuse poor grammar and spelling. The following are just some examples of what today’s stars are messing up on Twitter.

Alicia Keys

Due to the 140-character limit, many Twitter users remove letters from words in order to make it fit, and while it’s one way to get your point across, it’s another way to irritate people who prefer correct grammar. It’s unclear whether or not Ms. Alicia Keys removed the “e” from “be” to save character space, but she then added an “s” to the word “help”, which didn’t make grammatical sense.

Wayne Rooney

Spelling and grammar is one thing, but context is another. Wayne Rooney has a tendency to talk about random topics in one tweet, and they’re all separated by periods, which makes the tweet sound chunky. In the following tweet, Rooney lets us know that he:

1.                  Had a great day today (although he misspelled day)

2.                  Is back home chilling out

3.                  Has a funny son

4.                  Is going to bed.

Thanks for breaking all that down for us in 140 characters or less, Mr. Rooney.

Master P

Master P is an example of Alicia Keys and Wayne Rooney combined. In his tweets, Master P has a tendency to misspell words, and he is also known to discuss a variety of topics in one tweet. Unlike Rooney, though, Master P doesn’t separate his thoughts with periods, but with commas. And in order to save space, he doesn’t add a space after the comma, so his entire tweet runs together. Adding his own errors, he is also notorious for writing his tweets in all capital letters (which is the Internet equivalent to yelling). At least that keeps him from forgetting to capitalize the beginning of a new sentence.

While all three of these celebrities are different, they’re all notorious for making grammatical and spelling mistakes in their tweets. Some people don’t believe that using proper grammar, spelling and punctuation is important on Twitter, but it is. When your tweets are grammatically correct, it not only allows others to understand you completely and accurately, but it also doesn’t make you look like a fool.

Poor writing is not a matter of personal style and fame does not give individuals a special license to degrade language. Many will tell you that as long as one is understood it is all well but we know that standards in language specifically grammatical rules exist for a reason and serve to deliver clarity in content.

Recently Grammarly.com conducted research to determine the grammatical competence of celebrities. To our surprise celebrities of hispanic background scored quite high delivering a good number of grammatically correct tweets. You can see a really fun grammar infographic here.

Some people simply don’t have a thorough grasp on proper grammar and spelling, and that’s okay. There are plenty of tools available to help check your spelling and grammar. Should we use a grammar checker for small pieces of text? Absolutely.

Why Video Blogging is So Important

Social networking has been around for quite some time yet it is only recently that people have used videos to network with their friends and fans. I know I’ve used videos for demonstrations, but I’ve never really used them to show people about my life.

Do I want to give away that kind of privacy? At this point, I think so.  I’m ready to jump right in and do it. I’m actually a bit mad at myself for not doing it sooner. I was trying to protect “me” because I know there is so much in social networking where people can pry into your life, but I think it is time.

I don’t know why not. I’ve done presentations for people when I worked at Apple Computer and other various companies, yet I have to get over this shyness I have about myself. I think others in social networking should too. It’s time to break open that cocoon and let yourself go!

Don’t be scared. There are a lot of people jumping on the youtube social networking scene who were scared at first. I’m personally terrified, but I’m going to do it anyway. You should too. When the new 90 day challenge comes out I’m going to do that too. I suppose it wont be for another month or two which is a bummer, but I’m going to do it anyway.

So join me. Let’s visit each other on YouTube so we can follow our videos. If you’re a WAHM it is so important to get your word out there and this is the best way. Let people know you love what you do and show them.

Using Endorse to Save up to 100% on Groceries

This is a great deal for wahms and wahds. You can save up to 100% on your groceries by taking a picture of items on your receipts after your purchase and then sending it in with your Droid or iPhone using Endorse.

Tomorrow will be my first time using it. I’m just now getting into the whole “couponing thing” and I’m terrible at it. I’m trying this out to ease myself into it. Since I have to get my groceries delivered right now it’s difficult to do the coupon shopping because I don’t think the guy scans coupons at the door. I’m stuck with what Safeway offers. Also, my receipt might not be what Endorse can use. I hope it is.

You can sign up for Endorse and earn up to 100% off of selected items. I found the items I was going to purchase anyway and now I’m getting some free coffee and up to 50% off of dog food and other items. I get it back as cash in my account and cash out when I think it reaches $5.00. Not a bad deal considering with that I just saved $20.00 off my grocery bill that was originally $205.00 and then whatever savings I did at the store. I’ll let you know tomorrow what the grand total was. Again, I really stink at this whole coupon shopping thing. Maybe when I get a car it will make more sense because I can use newspaper coupons instead.

So sign up for Endorse and save (and get paid for referrals too)

What Was Your First Business Plan Like?

geekmom biz planWhat was your business plan like when you created it? Mine was inside a pink notebook written in ink in 2001. I wrote it after getting laid off from a webmaster/unix system administrator job. Unfortunately, the company shut down. I didn’t have a printer at the time, just a Macintosh G4 computer that the company I worked for sold to me for cheap and an Internet connection.

I was determined to make a ton of money. I didn’t know what I was doing. I tried many different projects and CMS systems. I mostly ran the CMS so that people could chat with each other while I did tech work installing computers at people’s homes and developed websites. As time went on, times changed. My company didn’t come to full bloom until 2009 when I started actually making money. I wasn’t thinking in terms of big Internet sites at the time, just how I could display my company name in the open while I worked.

I had my logo made during that time and continued to work. I’m now sharing what I know about making money with a CMS system which is now pretty much a blog. While I had geekmom.net going for some time, I also have several other blogs that I run under the geekmom company. These blogs make me a nice sum of money through affiliate programs and direct marketing.  It isn’t until now that I’ve decide to spill my “secrets”.

I’m also diving into other bigger agendas and finding my “thing” under the geekmom name. I will continue to grow and become as big as some of the others. There is no question of if, the question is when.

Now there have been others to use my name over the years and it’s real frustrating to see this because this is my brand and has been for at least 14 years. I won’t quit though and I will continue to grow until I have what I want.

Is that the way you feel about your business? It should be. If you have this attitude you will succeed, it’s just a matter of time.

Two Ways to Setup Autotweets

Here are Two Easy Methods of Setting Up Autotweets

Twitter is a system that likes most tweets to be random tweets by people chattering over there network. While this is the main purpose for twitter, you can send tweets automatically if you want to. These tweets can be setup as blog posts or through automatic tweet systems.

You can use a plugin called SNAPS (Social Networks Autoposter) to send tweets out from your blog. By setting up SNAPS to tweet your blog posts for you then you don’t need to worry about notifying your twitter followers if you have a post that day. The link can be provided to your users to click and open the blog post.

Who Will Tweet for You While You’re Gone?

But what if you are on vacation or you’re so busy that you can’t tweet and you still want your audience to know that you are around? You could hire someone to tweet for you. This might come at a costly sum because hiring a person to tweet for you 24 hours a day might drain your wallet for hourly fees.

You could use a product like hootsuite.com. For $4.99 per month you can have up to 5 different accounts tweeting automated tweets. All you need to do is fill in a text file full of tweets and autoload it to HootSuite and your tweets will be automatically sent out.

If you don’t want your tweets sent by a 3rd party an alternative is to setup your own microblog with WordPress. Simply install wordpress to a directory or domain off your main domain. Be sure to tell the robots not to search this directory. It won’t make much of a difference because all that will be are sentences and links which are tweets. Do not make actual posts, just post subject lines.

Use SNAP to autotweet the subject lines. Use the Editorial Calendar to make sure you have tweets scheduled all through the month or while you’re away. Don’t be spammy or it will be obvious. Just put a few comments, quotes, fun tweets, etc. to let people know you’re around and then a link to your different social networking sites, blogs, and affiliate programs on altering days. Remember, if you tweet too many spam links your account can be banned so be careful.

I know you’re wondering why people who try aren’t as successful and just think these are gimmicks, but many of these people just stop trying and that’s why the pros can give out such information. They know that most who buy it won’t even bother and will quit so the competition is low.

How is your competitive nature? What if every one of my members buys this package and then we’re all successful. Wouldn’t that be a kick!? We could all get together and share our results with what we’re doing.
